3 Alarming Disadvantages of Being a Full-Time Blogger

Are you dreaming of an online business that can give financial freedom? I guess the comfort of a work from home type of a career is the most ideal job for everybody who aspires to be a blogger. You will have the luxury of managing your own time without the hassle of a regular day job. Truly an opportunity that is worth every effort.

I started building websites since my college years and started blogging in 2009. I saw the potential of blogging at that time and earned my first one hundred dollars in Adsense on same year. I never looked back and concentrated more in blogging.

Since last year, I began full-time blogging and obviously it helped a lot on my blog’s Internet marketing endeavors and content management. I got the opportunity to work with other bloggers on my niche. This taught me the things that I never knew before. So blogging full-time creates more opportunity for you to grow more as a better blogger.

But are you aware that there are also disadvantages of being a full-time blogger? I present here the factors that I personally experienced first-hand. Please note that these observations are based entirely on my personal experiences in blogging. Some factors may not be similar in your context but could influence on how you handle your own life.

Disadvantages of being full-time blogging

It is addictive!

Blogging has changed my life since the first time I made money online. Last year, I quit my office job and started blogging full-time and the result were wonderful with regards to my sites earning capabilities.

Blogging became my life and I started to feel addictive about this career. I often think about blogging now and then, drive me to write new post after posts. When I was out of my computer, I kept on wondering about my earning status, my sites statistics and my email. It gives me satisfaction once I see these stats, which in turn inspires me to blog more.

I had to cease blogging for one week just to check myself if I am really a blogging addict. Self-control is one trait that I am practicing now, applying some alternative habits to control my blogging cravings. This includes sports and regular Christian worship. Even though I am not medically diagnosed as a blogging addict, I can say that I perfectly recovered from this mental and emotional career attachment. My advice, don’t take blogging seriously.

Blogging isolates you from people on your surroundings

Although you make friends and builds your own blogging community online, there is no better way to socialize to your actual friends on your neighborhood and of course to your family.

This is another drawback of serving blogs full-time. It promotes isolation from your family and friends. You are probably thinking that you are sociable enough due to your number of followers in Twitter and Facebook, but that is not the proper way to make real friends.

Keeping a healthy relationship with actual people is much better than your online friends. Being sociable offline helps develop your self-esteem and confidence, which in turn can add more value to your over-all personality. My advice, don’t be stuck in a computer table and move on with your life naturally.

Your mind will be clouded when it comes to other business opportunities

This is another disadvantages of being a full-time blogger. It actually makes you blind on other home based business opportunities, thinking that blogging is the only business method that can make money for you.

Since I make money from blogging successfully, I never entertained various business opportunities that are offered to me by friends and relatives. I even turned down some lucrative job offers even though I knew that I can incorporate my blogging endeavors with a regular day job.

I soon realized that I gave up many business opportunities that could give me an extra or alternative income. My advice, learn how to appreciate life’s blessings. Grab every possible business opportunities in life, to avoid regrets and disappointments in the future.

These are the three alarming disadvantages of being a full-time blogger. I suggest that you avoid doing any of these factors so that you can enjoy the benefits of blogging to the fullest!

  2. Hi Noah,

I agree with your points. If you’re full blogger or freelance writer, you hardly spend time with your family and friends instead you spend whole day and half night in front of your system.

    • Hello Aasma,

People will definitely notice our dedication in blogging and sometimes, bloggers are criticized to be more of an addict rather than passion. So we really need to do some balance with our work whether its blogging or not.

      Thanks for stopping by Aasma.

  3. Blogging is very addictive. I really must get away from it to control myself. This is one of the biggest disadvantage in my opinion. You tend to isolate and forget other real flesh and blood people. Very good article. Gives me some control of my life now.

  4. I think once you’ve established a good working pattern, it wouldn’t be addictive or isolate you from other people and opportunities. Man is always struggling to find a balance between work and personal life, and blogging full time is no different.

    • Hi Adeline,

You are entirely correct. However, some seasoned bloggers views blogging as both their work and personal life (like a career). So balancing can be a conflict scenario. People would definitely notice your full dedication on your blogging endeavors, which sometimes can also be linked to an addiction dilemma. How you handle other things besides blogging will be the determining factor if blogging has a negative effects on you.

      Thanks

  5. Gerald Martin from SEO Reseller says:

The first one sounds like more of an advantage than a disadvantage to me. I’ll look at it this way: if I’m addicted to blogging, it will improve my writing skills, and it will also help me become more visible online. Yes, it does involve having to look at the computer most of the time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t write your blogs down before typing it on your computer.

    • Hi Gerald,

There’s actually nothing wrong if that is your point of view. Whether an addiction is good or bad, it is entirely up to you on how you handle or accept the situation.

      Thanks for your opinion.

  6. I don’t agree with this completely. Its true that it isolates you from outside world but with blogging you can enjoy royal life which you can never think while doing a private job.

    • Hi Puneet,

The article covers in general. This means that it actually depends on your point of views. If you don’t see anything wrong on being addictive, then it’s your perspective and I respect that.

      Thanks

  10. Nice Post. Ya, if a person is blogging full time, it usually gets addictive to it and its offline life is almost over. Thanks for this great post. Keep up the good work :) :)

  11. being addicted to blogging is ok in my eyes, it shows that you have a passion, you love what your doing, what could be better than that? oh yeh! you`re getting paid for it too

  12. Of all those, the last one is definitely the worst for you. I guess when you get into something enough it gives you a sort of “tunnel vision” and you forget what other lucrative options are out there.

At the very least, though, even if one day I can no longer make good money off of it, blogging will always be a hobby of mine.

    • Hey Steven,

I can’t agree more. If people are blinded by the enticing nature of online business (blogging), people will definitely get brainwashed that there is no other opportunities for them besides blogging.

      Thank you for your opinion.

  14. Hi Noah,

Now the time when blogging has become very crucial for online businesses. There is a huge demand of good and professional bloggers. So its very necessary for every blogger to increase his.her skills and use them on very right places.
BTW your explanation on blogging was awesome.
    Keep it up!

  15. I love blogging but don’t consider myself to be a blogging addict. I admit though that in the beginning it did consume a lot of my time but that is the same in any business when you first start out. Once you gain momentum you can start to throttle back a little so that you can concentrate on other more important things in life, like your family and your Christian duties.

  17. I think it can only be addictive if it’s your passion and you really love writing. Nice info which will be prove so useful for all blogger and online marketers.

  18. I think it’s important to work full time, if you want to see your blog mature into an online business generating considerable amount of income over time. One can definitely consider lucrative job opportunities, but if money was so important to them, they wouldn’t have quit their job in the first place. Blogging as a hobby and blogging part-time will remain just that – Hobby sites. There is a lot of difference between blogging/writing and turning it into a successful business venture.

  19. Definitely addictive but I would strongly suggest that you diversify. I just recently lost my adsense account with a lot of money. To top it off, my main money making site just lost its’ google love and now I am looking to start new money making schemes, but I wish they were already in place. It would save a lot of worry that I have right now.

  20. Great arguments. As I assess myself this days, nearly fit some exact category from the three. Blogging is really enthusiastically engaging and time consuming. Glad you’ve made a clear arguments for this.

  21. While I certainly agree that it is addicting and can be isolating as well, by doing it right and creating a balance you can have the best of both worlds!

  22. Blogging and being on the internet is definitely addictive in fact there have been a number of medical studies proving this is the case. But what is of concern is they are linking high internet addiction to depression.

  23. You’re right, full time blogging can be addictive because you always want to be in front of the computer. We should not abuse our self and also we must control our self in using computers.

  24. Hi Noah!

I do believe that “once you tested, always wanted” that’s what blogging all about. But, maybe, it depends on how the person balance his/her life online and offline. Balance of being sociable online and in the actual community. Much better to be exposed more on the actual community ‘coz that’s the most effective way of developing self-confidence. In the end, you’re the only one holding your life so it’s up to you what will you gonna do with it.

  25. Hey Noah
Agree with your points I also become addict of freelancing not a from last year and my social life was totally disturb every one think I am selfish and no doubt I m because I know the value of time and how to convert your time to money indeed it’s a common problem of IT consultants.

  26. Maybe it’s just me… this article is crazy! I don’t agree with it at all. Full time bloggers are crazy to find this field addicting. If they do, it’s time to figure out how to over come that addiction. Addiction is a BAD thing!… So the fact that it’s addicting makes many want to stay clear of it even more.

Blogging as a full time job is so time consuming that’s the main disadvantage of full time blogging. If you don’t blog, you don’t earn money. These days you can earn so much more consistently if you create a number of niche websites that don’t require daily updating.

I also have not once heard someone say ” I don’t want to expand my income, I rather blog!” That’s a crazy statement to even consider when the world of internet marketing, webmastering and affiliate marketing is so large and grows every day. If you are limited to only one way of earning money, soon you will discover that you are missing out on thousands of dollars each month simply because you said no.

My advice is to expand. There is so much more than just blogging that can earn a full time income. Read books, visit forums on webmastering and learn as much as you can about these fields. Don’t be thick-headed!

I’ve been a full time webmaster for the last 7 years. I started with blogging and after 3 months only earned $300! That was crazy low for the amount of work I put into the blog. From then on, I want into building niche websites and turning a profit from each one every single month. I’m able to earn $300 a month for every single niche site I have ( and I have dozens of them ) . The best part is that I can build the site once, update it twice a month and be done.

It’s all about time! Time is money so why spend forever blogging and blogging when you could be spending that time with family and earning money at the same time?

Seriously.. it’s sad to see the word addiction and blogging combined together. That’s just not the proper way to describe this form of money making.

    Best of luck everyone!

  27. Malinda@google seo ranking says:

I read it somewhere that people stop looking for job once they get one job. It must be similar psychology working for bloggers too. If blogging is earning some money for them, they stop looking for other better and profitable areas.
I think that you should publish more about this subject matter, it might not be a taboo matter but usually folks don’t speak about such subjects. To the next! All the best!!

  28. Jim Antoine from php programmer says:

I own and manage blogs. This takes a considerable amount of time from my life. I like it. I felt like an addict too. What made me feel better was my decision to continue my old job. As a freelancer of-course. I don’t want to be an employee anymore. I do some programming and also help my income. These secrets, together with family bonds growing tighter, is what keeps me sane…

  30. I like your post, although i don’t agree completely.. I am a full-time freelancer and part-time blogger, and i have to say, i’m not isolated at all. On the contrary, i have more time to see my family and friends.. About addiction, i think any job that is interesting is addictive, not just blogging. And finally, about your last point, i think it’s up to every person to decide, i don’t think it cannot be generalized..

  31. While I agree that I can take some time away from family, it’s nothing compared to how much I was away from them working for corporate America. I still keep an office, but I can work at home, and take frequent breaks to play with my kids. Like anything worth doing…there are pros and cons.

    My .02 cents.

  32. You have a very good point about the disadvantages of blogging and I was hit by the fact that I make more friends online that friends with the people offline. I don’t have enough time for parties during saturdays because of blogging.

It is indeed addictive as per experience. Sometimes I can’t sleep because i’m always thinking of different ways how to make money from my blogging venture.

Good that you have included in your concluding paragraph the dangers of quitting your regular job for blogging coz I actually thinking of that not this year but maybe in the span of 5 years.

Thanks for giving us enlightenment about this fact.
