A list of best WordPress Plugins definitely helps a new blogger to set up his first blog. Here I list of all the WordPress plugins I’m using on this blog. I aim at specifically two objectives in publishing this post – (1) I will get suggestions to remove / update / or substitute any of these plugins if they are not best WordPress plugins and (2) some new friends will get a complete list of plugins to add on their blog. So, here goes the list of best plugins.
The Best WordPress Plugins I’m Using
This is one of the best WordPress plugins and I love it most to display advertisements in this blog. It injects any advert (e.g. AdSense) into the WordPress posts or widget area. It can restrict who sees the ads by post length, age, referrer or IP and so on. Ad Injection is compatible to the caching plugins and that’s another reason why I love it. (see Ad Injection WordPress Plugin – Show Ads Where It Matters for more information.)
Akismet is the old lion in the field of stopping spammers. But the lion is bit naughty and often catches genuine comments. Many bloggers complain that Akismet has deleted the legitimate comments even before the blog owner noticed it. However, it is still used by millions, Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and trackback spam. I use Akismet and GASP combined to effectively fight against spam comments.
All in One SEO Pack
This is another old lion. I use WordPress SEO for my other blogs but I’m still using AIO on this blog. It is partly due to its compatibility with my theme and partly because, when huge numbers of bloggers are using, it truly deserve its position. AIO calls it an Out-of-the-box SEO for your WordPress blog. Now, whether it is the best WordPress plugin or WP SEO, let’s discuss.
All in One Webmaster
I use this plugin for three major webmaster’s tasks – 1) Sitemap Submission to Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com. 2) To automatically add Google, Bing, Yahoo, Alexa, Facebook Insights, Facebook, Blogcatalog Webmaster Meta Tag and 3) To add Google, Quantcast.com, GetClicky.com, Compete.com Analytics scripts on my blog. So, in fact, it is as the name is all in one webmaster tool – the best wordpress plugins.
Many bloggers even don’t know that there exists an Antivirus plugin for WordPress blog, but, this is really useful and highly recommended to every blogger. On any new blog I install it at the end when I’ve installed everything else. Then I run scan and verify everything is safe. After than whenever I see alert sent in my email, I directly jump into the theme folder and delete the newly created files or modification in existing ones. This has really helped me to run blog without problem for long. Thus, Antivirus is a security solution as a smart, effectively plugin to protect your blog against exploits and spam injections.
This is the best WordPress plugin if you wish to create pages with alphabetical list of your posts. I use it to display the index of all of the posts in this blog. It makes you easy to look for any post you’ve published earlier. AZIndex is a highly customizable and user friendly plugin to create one or more alphabetical indexes of selected posts in your WordPress blog.
cbnet Ping Optimizer
Saves your wordpress blog from getting tagged as ping spammer. (Note: this plugin is a fork of the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin, with registration/activiation functionality removed.)
Page speed is now one of the ranking factor and if your blog loads slow, it is hampering your ranking. There can be a number of methods to speed up your page loading. CloudFlare is one of the services to protect your blog against attacks and its CDN helps to increase page load speed (see Introduction to CloudFlare and how to activate it on HostGator). This plugin integrates your blog with the CloudFlare platform.
CommentLuv and KeywordLuv always remains the best WordPress plugin to reward my readers by automatically placing a link to their last blog post at the end of their comment. There is a premium version of CommentLuv available and I was much excited. However, the price is high enough when I missed the $20 offer. I don’t think I’ll pay $40 or more for this.
Contact Form 7
This is the best WordPress plugin to add a ‘Contact Us’ page on your blog. It is simple but flexible. I made my Contact Me page with this plugin.
FD Feedburner Plugin
WordPress has its own feed system and it serves almost all purpose but if you prefer to use Feedburner this plugin is recommended to redirect all feeds to a Feedburner feed. There are greater number of options to burn your feed and publish through Feedburner.
How many times you notice problems after you publish your post? It often happens to me and I need to fix it before it is distributed widely. Feed Pauser is the best WordPress plugin to pause a feed from immediately being published. Not only to pause, you can also disable individual posts from appearing in feeds. In fact, all posts are not equal, isn’t it?
Google XML Sitemaps
Generating a sitemap and submit it to all the major search engines is one of the most important SEO step. Google XML Sitemaps will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com to better index your blog. This is a most recommended if your theme does not have SEO features.
Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin
This is definitely the best WordPress plugin. GASP is a very simple plugin that adds a client side generated checkbox to the comment form requesting that the user clicks it to prove they are not a spammer. Bots wont see it, so their spam comment will be discarded.
HelloBar for WordPress
There are two different plugins to display a horizontal bar at the top of your site so that you can convey some important message or offers – HelloBar or ViperBar. You can read more about HelloBar or ViperBar at my post on Bivori – Subscriber list with HelloBar or ViperBar.
This is a small and unbelievably useful plugin. It allows you to quickly search and insert information (links, images, videos, maps, news..) into your blog posts. You can search within your own blog on from the web. Very useful and easy to use tool!
How often are you annoyed to see that your commenter is ‘towable tube’? We understand the value of backlink with proper anchor text but how to accept the commenter’s name as that? So KeywordLuv solves the problem. KeywordLuv is to reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords, in the link to their website, giving them improved anchor text. For example, leaving “Suresh Khanal @ SEO MMO Tips Blog” in the name field.
If you are thinking what’ the benefit to me? I encourage you to go through my earlier post Why don’t you love keywordLuv?
This is probably the best WordPress plugin for security of your blog. Most of the hacking is done through brute-force method and it stops them to access the login after the specified number of failed attempts. Thus, it adds some extra security to WordPress by restricting the rate at which failed logins can be re-attempted from a given IP range. Distributed through Bad Neighborhood.
ManageWP – Worker
This plugin is required if you are using ManageWP to handle your multiple blogs through single dashboard. It helps you to manage all your blogs from one dashboard. If you don’t know about this service, please visit
This plugin is to remove rel=”nofollow” attribute from hyperlinks. Why would you want to do that? Well, I installed this plugin to reward my regular comment writers with a dofollow link love. If you are commenting on this blog for some time, you must notice the links back to your site are Nofollow free. It lets you to remove the nofollow tag from your blog’s comments with a lot of options customizable, per user type removal, per comments count removal etc… Supports multilingual and a Top Commenters sidebar Widget.
No Self Pings
I just did not like to see my own posts listed as pings to my new post. This plugin keeps WordPress from sending pings to your own site.
This is not essential but having a showcase with top posts on a widget is nice. It can also be used to track social media analytics, and engage with your readers from the WP dashboard.
Pretty Link Pro
This is a sweet and smart plugin to shrink, track and share any URL on the Internet from your WordPress website! This is a must if you are interested in affiliate marketing. Cloak your affiliate links so that nobody can steal your commission. This is a paid plugin.
ReplyMe is a great plugin to send email to author automatically while someone reply his comment. I love this plugin especially because it helps to reduce email flooding compared to Subscribe to Comments plugin.
Daniel Tan’s Popular SEOPressor automatically optimizes your on-page SEO to hit top search engine rankings. This plugin analyzes and award a score along with suggestions to optimize the post when you are creating. This is a paid plugin.
Adds a dynamic bar with sharing icons (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) that changes based on browser size and page location. The reason I love this plugin is (1) You can add as many custom buttons as you need (2) It dynamically suits the display – whether vertical at the edge or horizontal at the top of post based on the browser width.
If you know the power of Ping.fm you’d immediately realize the power of this plugin. It sends status updates to Ping.fm everytime you publish a post, using your own domain, bit.ly, wp.me, su.pr, is.gd and others for shortened permalinks.
Another best WordPress plugin. It is most easy to insert YouTube videos in posts, comments and RSS feeds and top of that with full customization. Who would believe that a line of URL will produce video on your post?
Subscribe to Comments Reloaded
I believe there is no need to explain any further, the name itself is obvious enough. Subscribe to Comments Reloaded is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notifications. It includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts or suspend all notifications.
Target Blank In Posts And Comments
Did you forgot to add target=”_blank” to your outgoing links in many posts? Don’t you want to keep your visitors and open the external links to new window? This plugin is the best one to add target blank automatically into post and comment content URLs and external links will open in new tabs.
Thank Me Later
Automatically send a ‘thank you’ e-mail to those who comment on your blog. This plugin engages the visitor by reminding them to check back for responses or new blog posts. The plugin is highly configurable with multiple messages, variable delay and restrictions.
The best WordPress plugin to display top commenters and / or top contributors if you have multi-authored blog. You can display name with link to the contributor’s website or display a gallery of commenter’s gravatar in a widget.
Tweet old post
This is a little champ. There is no need to preach the power of Twitter and what would be better if it picks a random post from within your criteria and tweets it randomly. Truly a must have plugin.
If you want your commenters leave their twitter ID while commenting, this plugin is best to show a link to follow the comment author on twitter if they have entered in their username at least once in the comment form.
Bloggers use this to easily show other forms of ‘social proof’ very easily on their blog to help other people see that their site is worth reading. Using a simple shortcode, or the widget, users can display: – How many comments their blog has – How many posts they’ve written – Number of Facebook fans- Number of Twitter followers (taken automatically from account page) – Alexa rank – and Google pagerank.
WordPress Editorial Calendar
Tabular presentation of the posts that are published and are scheduled. The Editorial Calendar makes it possible to see all your posts and drag and drop them to manage your blog. It is really a handy plugin.
This is one of the best WordPress plugins for security. It Blocks suspicious-looking requests to WordPress and sends alert to the owner’s email. You are immediately notified if anything nasty is going on in your blog.
Manages your WordPress database. Allows you to optimize database, repair database, backup database, restore database, delete backup database , drop/empty tables and run selected queries. Supports automatic scheduling of backing up, optimizing and repairing of database.
This plugin helps you to keep your database clean by removing post revisions and spams in a blaze. allows you to rename your admin name also. Additionally it allows you to run optimize command on your wordpress core tables (use with caution).
Not that necessary, but still good to see how many users are online on your WordPress site.
WP About Author
Easily display customizable author bios below your posts. This adds a little more features and the look is really nice to the author’s bio box.
Yes I know, they are too many, but I am too greedy to leave any of them out. However, because blog loading speed is considered one of the ranking factor and because too many plugins slows the blog down, I’ll have to cut the list short. Which of these plugins you recommend to remove from my blog? Looking for your suggestions.
