To Comment on This Blog and All Other Blogs

I do comment on lots of posts every day and so you do. Are your ALL comments get approved? Are they successful to cause the desired impact? Are you getting the traffic back to your blog posts through those comments as they deserve? Do other bloggers notice you and you got some great friends?
If you are not yet engaged in blog commenting, please consider the top 7 benefits of blog commenting:
#1 – Best method of building up your brand awareness
#2 – Awesome for natural link building strategies
#3 – Make yourself well-known and develop online relationship with bloggers
#4 – Enrich your knowledge and experience through discussion
#5 – Drive indirect traffic to your own blog
#6 – Increase your audience base
#7 – Get an idea for your next blog post
Do you aspire anything else while you comment on this or any other blogs? It’s because of these benefits (that stood effective throughout the time and tests), the witty people (?) developed scripts to auto post the comments on maximum number of blogs at once. Does it not prove how important and effective the commenting on blogs is?
BUT SPAMS!
You don’t like spam comments, do you? I hate them most. When you have heavy benefits to reap off from a blog post, you should not be that lazy. Your comments should not appear spam. Think of offering a good value; that will result in happy give & take relationship.
Today, on this post, I’d like to discuss about blog commenting and what are the different points you should care for.
Top 5 Suggestions for Comment Authors
These are what I follow while commenting on any blog posts and wish if every comment authors in this blog consider them positively:
#1 If a blog offers keywordLuv, type real name followed by @YourKeywords
This is what troubles me most – many comments that not bad and appear genuine but contains keywords in name field. I don’t think they are spam comments. It must be because they know very well the importance of having keyword as an anchor but are completely unaware of keywordLuv.
KeywordLuv is a WordPress plugin. If a blog has installed and enabled it you can see the following message somewhere inside comment form.
In the name box of comment form, enter your real name and then follow with keyword separated by @ symbol. For example if I wish to link my website with SEO MMO Tips as anchor text, I fill in the name box with:
Suresh Khanal @SEO MMO Tips
This identifies me and creates link on SEO MMO Tips.
#2 Do not insert links inside comments if they are not MOST essential
Links are most valuable, I understand, but you shouldn’t expect too much. Almost all blogs has a URL box to leave your blog URL. Moreover if it has commentLuv plugin installed, it automatically pulls your recent post link. When you are welcomed with two links, don’t type any other inside comment body.
I’m more surprised to see some of my comment authors who do not use commentLuv and rather inject links inside body. Links inside comment body is considered SPAM by Akismet and most probably ditched in spam folder.

But, however, if the link is essential for the discussion, you are welcome to leave it.
The following image shows how the comment is published if you have used keywordLuv and commentLuv facility:

#3 Do not get hurried
If your all purpose is just to snatch a back link, it’s certain, your comment won’t get published. I love links as much as you do – you are earning it and I am spending. If you try to snatch, I better know how to protect it.
Leaving comment on any blog is not just speaking bla bla bla and get a link back to you. Remember, commenting is a form of blogging outside your blog. Write engaging pieces and help for topic discussion. I believe what goes around comes around.
#4 Register to Gravatar and build your brand
If you are blogger you know branding very well. And if you comment often, I highly recommend to register on Gravatar. Don’t you like to show your face or logo everywhere you comment?
Gravatar helps to assign an image with email address so that wherever you comment the image is displayed. It is nice to set your picture as gravatar image. If you wish to promote your brand, the site logo can serve better. Most of the blog owners prefer face or your picture as it helps to build up personal relationship.
#5 Avoid One Sentence Comment
“Nice Post’”, “Thank you for sharing”, “I found this blog today and excited to see lot of information” and similar are some popular comments that is never approved in this or any other blog. These comments are most often generated by auto-bots and sometimes by human-bots too! Whatever, I hardly believe that any blog owner will ever approve them.
Please do not comment if you have nothing to say on the topic. You can just tweet or share on other social network, if you like the post but did not find anything to say.
How to squeeze out maximum from commenting?
Commenting in any blog post is good enough to build up relationship and improve brand awareness, but if you wish to focus and expect better SEO benefits, following methods should help you.
#1 Find blog posts on related topic
Back links from related content have higher value and the most easiest way of finding this super link is by commenting on posts that are related. For example, to promote this post I will be looking for blog posts about commenting. How can you find blog posts on related topics?
#1 Google and other search engine
Google search engine is awesome whenever you are looking for something. There are a few search skills that lets you to narrow down the results and present only what you are searching. Look at the Advanced Search in Google.com

#2 BlogEngage, Blokube, BlogEnterract Search
Blogger’s networks like blogEngage, Blokube, BlogEnterract and so on offers search facility in their site and this can be a great source to find related posts easily.
Not only the search, it lists some related posts when you submit your post as well as viewing any post submission.

#3 Twitter Hash Tags
Twitter and hash tags can really be a sharp tool to search for particular topic. The good thing about twitter is that you’ll find the posts that are relatively newer. I use TweetDeck – a twitter management application – and it helps me much when I need to look for some related posts.
#2 Write something that catches attention
While commenting, try to look for something that catches author as well as reader’s attention. This will provoke others to respond on your comment. You’ll get noticed and that’s what intended, isn’t it?
#3 Disagree and present your better views
This works great but be careful. If you step on wrong foot, you’ll rather loose your ground. But if you know how to disagree and can better suggest the good way of doing things or fixing the world, who can stop you? After all we need betterment.
#4 Response the author’s reply to your comment
Most people leaves a comment and forget and most of the comments are replied by the blog author. What’s the use if you don’t return back and read what was replied to your comment?
I strongly suggest every blogger to install ReplyMe WordPress Plugin so that the comment author is aware of the incident through email. What else was that email field in comment form?
Responding the authors reply to your comment helps you stand high in the crowd immediately as it proves that you are interested to the topic and enjoy ongoing discourse.
I read a message by someone in twitter – “tweet it once, I’ll be happy, tweet it many times, you’ll be happy”!
#5 Check author’s About page and mention it on your comment
This is wonderful way to build stronger relationship with blog author. Look at the About page. There is something interesting about the blogger or the blog. Don’t forget to mention it in your comment. This will show that you really care what the blog is for. The way the blogger responds is lot differently than it would have a normal comment.
I still remember – “The co-producer of four children” – in one of the great blogger’s bio. Did you notice who that belongs to?
#6 Reply the comments of other comment author
There is nothing wrong in replying others’ comments. You can join the discussion and share your views. Blog commenting is not private discussion between author and a commenter, in fact, it is public discussion and everybody is welcome for all genuine discourse.
Replying the comments of other commenters has directly double benefit. You’ll get noticed by both the blog author as well as the original comment author.
#7 Don’t forget to tweet and share the post after you comment
This is what I do at the end of commenting on any blog post. Sharing something you read and liked is useful to your followers too. Promoting a post where you comment has an indirect benefit to you too. If the posts gets good rank then your link there gets greater share.
The share and support does not go unnoticed. The blog author thinks good of you and is willing to return the favor to your posts too! That’s why, what goes around comes around.

Blog commenting is so underrated by most..I mean
- Traffic – I get up all up to 80 people from commenting on some blog I have
- SEO – If it has KeywordLuv, it’s a + for SEO..Can’t really say no to that
What I do hate is when someone obviously just comments with like “Thank you, this is a great read”. Ugh, just shut up if you have nothing to say, you’re only hurting yourself in the long run, when no one will want to accept your comments anymore.
As for finding blogs in the same niche, I just do “niche blog”. Like, “Photography blog” and open all blogs on the first two pages, then put out the spammy ones and bad ones.

I fully agree with all the tips you mentioned for blog commenting. Keywordluv plugin is an awesome wordpress tool to get more traffic for bloggers as well as blog readers, but I slightly disagree.
If a blog offers keywordLuv, then visitors should type real name followed by @YourKeywords as mentioned by you but if a blog does not allow this offer that is the keywordluv plugin is not installed it is mentioned in the comments policy to not type name as real name@keywords but just real name then I feel it should be followed.
Keywordluv plugin is not installing on my blog so I have set to just add real name in comment form. Also for a single blog commenter realname@keyword1 realname@keyword2 and realname@keyword3 shows three or four different commenters in the top commenters widget. So I have altered all the comment authors real name as name in comments.
I am looking for the error solution and hopefully if the plugin gets installed I may consider.
You have highlighted tips for blog commenting with images very well. I have always appreciated your articles. Happy blogging

That’s true Kavita. I try not to use @keyword when the blog does not have keywordLuv installed. But sometimes, it skips, might be its developed as habit. Moreover my oversmart Chrome, most of the time it automatically fills the name, url and email field. If i’m not much conscious, @keyword lurks even in blogs without keywordLuv plugin.
And there is problem if a user uses different keyword with their name – it is considered as two persons by Top Commenters and many other plugins. I wish if keywordLuv upgrade to solve this issue.
Still, I prefer to offer keywordLuv with a hope that I will get some name to address to. I don’t want to call somebody “Hi makeMoneyOnline”

The thing about links inside the comment is, I find it to be a little tacky. After all, there’s already a link attached to your commentators’ names, as well as CommentLuv. Anything else just seems kind of like blog crashing. =)

Hi Suresh,
KeywordLUV and CommentLUV are the best plugins for all the bloggers. I have been using this in my main blog too. From last week I was not able to comment a lots, by religiously commenting on blogs for a week and above has boosted my Alexa ranking.
However good to see your blog in one piece, yesterday it was all scattered every where, and it was the same story with my blog too… and it took me around a day to solve the issues.

Great long list of comment tips to follow, but I had one more for you and that is:
“Don’t Change The Name And Email Address But Still Linking Back to the Same site”
What I mean is, there are people who want to get to the top of the “Top Comment List” and they want, not just a single position but multiple position, and because of that, they like to change name and email in a single post and give out multiple comments just to get to the top list of commentator.
I really feel this is totally ridiculous, and recently I had a commentator who actually do that on my blog, although his comment are not spam as he did write good comment, but he changes his name and email a few times and worst, I doubt he even read the entire post, I mean every comment he give are agreement of what I wrote…
Well, I immediately delete all his comment and he email me asking why? And I just tell him what he is doing is absolutely not right and he said he had done this on other blog and never got delete and reject, but here’s what I tell him…
“MY BLOG IS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE BLOG”
Because I’m a human and I do read every single comment and reply to them as much as possible and I do not want to waste my previous time on comment that sucks…
What you think, have you got this sort of comment before?

That’s true and I agree with you. Multiple comments in a single post with different name and email address is certainly playing with blog author’s intentions. But I have a problem here. As we all know proper anchor text is valuable, and having backlinks from different related anchor is more favored for SEO. KeywordLuv helped to get the comment author’s name but because WordPress and its many plugins consider everything typed in name box as commenter’s name, causes multiple entries even for same email address. The top commenter plugin displays same gravatar in multiple positions.
Do you think we should be using same name@anchor or allow the multiple faces on top commenter plugin? Quite confusing.
Twitter: TheBadBlogger
22 May 2011 at 9:57 pm Permalink
As long as the commentator intention is not communicating as a proper commentator should do, there is not reason for me to accept any of it – whether or not he or she is using name@anchor or multiple faces.
Commenting’s main goal is to discuss and communicate and not link here and there, the linking part is always the second goal, if any commentator can’t fulfill the number one goal – communicate, then there is no reason to even look at the second goal…

I’m talking about genuine comments and the commenter as you said, but the only problem is he/she wishes to use different anchor text while filling in Name field. This produces same faces multiple times in top commenter list. How do you take this?
Twitter: TheBadBlogger
23 May 2011 at 6:37 am Permalink
no I won’t allow and I believe the 99% of the commentator who is going to use different anchor text with the same name aren’t here for communication, and I had done this before using different anchor text with the same name on copyblogger, and I had read every word of the post and making comment, and my comment was not approve till today, so I believe unless the blog allows or else this strategy is useless… I mean even famousbloggers.net doesn’t aollow multiple anchor text with the same name…

Commenting on other’s blog is always a give and take process. You read the content and leave your comment, and then chances are they leave a comment on yours in return. However, this don’t happen quite often. I agree with your point #3 : Do not get hurried. Actually, if we wanna make a brand of our blog or website, we should try to make our comment viable, reasonable, relevant and direct to the point – and being in a hurry just deprives us of that aim.

On the other hand do you opine that it is only the dofollow links that boosts your ranking? Is it the relevant anchor or the dofollow attribute to give you better push? I used keywordluv to let my commenters have relevant keyword and I get their real name. Please see http://www.seommotips.com/blogging-tips/blog-commenting/ about commenting here and anywhere else. http://www.bivori.com/download-keywordluv-plugin/ is what I think about keywordLuv.

Spammers are always headache. Use GASP and hope the world will be better tomorrow.
Hi! I have always been annoyed by spammers. Especially among the blogs that I have really worked hard on making and those which I want to use as a way to get more ideas from other like-minded bloggers. The blog commenting world would certainly be much better if people learn to respect blogs more.
Agree with you totally, and it is a very nice feeling when some one comments on our blog

Hmm it seems like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any tips for inexperienced blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.
Wow, These are the best blog commenting tips i have ever seen plus thank you so much for sharing out the comments!
Thanks for the wonderful tips. Every comment writers must consider these aspects. After all if you are marked as spammer, there will be less chance of getting your comments approved by other blogs as well. Spamming will harm anybody in long run.
