This is a quick post to inform you of a recent update – Now you no more require 25 likes to get SEO Friendly URL for your Facebook pages. Good news, isn’t it?
When you create a new page in Facebook, it used to provide a temporary URL (the web address of your page) such as http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pregnancy/113592148748540. When that page is liked by 25 or more people (got clicks on that ‘Like’ button) the page creator had an option to assign a username so that the new URL would be http://facebook.com/username. This URL is called vanity URL. Vanity URL is pretty much valuable as:
- It is easier to remember for your users
- It is more SEO Friendly
However, getting those 25 likes before you could set vanity URL was really troublesome. Because the page is just created, its not yet popular and you had to go for asking your friends for their favor. Or, you had to go through some nasty tricks so that you got 25 likes and could grab the URL. One easier method I discussed was gaining Facebook Likes by using services like Twiends, but it no longer works now.
Well, all these were the plights of past. The GREAT NEWS is that, now you can create any Facebook page and get your vanity URL right now.
I have a new Facebook page for my niche site Pregnancy Goods and it got http://facebook.com/pregnancygoods even when it has only 9 likes yet.

How to Set Vanity URL for Facebook Pages?
Its pretty simple. Just go to
- http://facebook.com/username
- Choose you page and enter the desired page name
- Click Check Availability
- If the name you entered is available, you can set it as permanent URL and Voila!

but with this change, I afraid, most of the Facebook Page Name with high keyword value will be reserved. To get nice facebook URL will be like getting nice gmail address.

Yes you are right man marketer will be now reserved it and thus Google will put social networking more value then authority website

This does NOT work, maybe they removed the 25 like restriction temporarily but as at today (November 11th 20110 it does NOT work and you STILL need a minimum 25 Likes to get a vanity URL
This is strange, I am trying to get a vanity URL, if I just put into the browser http://www.facebook.com/xxxxx XXXXX being the name, it says not found (great, it´s free) but the moment I try to change the username, it says it´s not available. Anyone else had this?
This is strange but it might be the word is reserved word by Facebook itself.
I just create fan page, and cant claim the username, FB still put, u need 25 fans to have username.
Why is that so??

It DOES work, but FB only allows you to set a vanity url for a facebook page under 25 fans ONE TIME. Each facebook account holder can do this for ONE FB Page, after they have done it once, the 25 minimum is in effect for ALL other pages they create.

I don’t understand but for some pages I have created vanity URL soon after creating the page and for some pages, facebook doesn’t allow me to do that. Strange!

The type of page you created determines whether or not you have to have 25 likes or not. For example, community pages have to have 25 like to get a vanity URL, but a public figure page does not.
@Sashwat: I think the requirement of 25 likes still applies to fan pages, but has been removed for other pages.
