Not Ranked Well And Very Low Traffic? Your Site Is Not SEO friendly!

Some ways to create SEO friendly website

Most website owners, also called as webmasters or admins, wonder why their site never manage to appear in the top 25 or top 50 results. These people fail to understand the direct connection SEO has with the search engine rankings. Search Engine Optimization (SEO), in simplest of words, is a web marketing strategy that allows a website to be easily visible to search engines as a separate domain and for specific set of keywords. A SEO friendly website would have a higher position in the search result than a website that is not SEO friendly, irrespective of how good the content is in the latter one.

Here are few ways which should be kept in mind to create a SEO friendly website.

1) Identify a good domain name - Choosing a good domain name for a website is the first and foremost task towards owning a site. Generally, since good domain names are hard to find, most people create first mistake by over-stuffing keywords in the domain name or use hyphens within them. Domain names like – www(dot)iammanchesterunitedfan(dot)com or www(dot)i-am-manchester-united-fan(dot)com are not SEO friendly. Keeping your domain names short and without any hyphens would be the first step to have a SEO friendly website.

2) Include a Sitemap

Sitemaps are the xml files, which lists all the URLs for a site. Having them, as a part of website, is an important SEO technique. The webmaster or the admin of the website needs to submit this sitemap to the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. This would let the search engine to locate the website in a much better way.

3) Limit the use of flash and image content

The search engines basically use a program called spider that crawls over the web and looks for text content so anything that isn’t text would be ultimately ignored by the search engines. So using flash based content and images should be limited. People who use more images should use HTML tags appropriately and include the keywords in them so that the images are located, by the search engines, through their text tags. This way the site would remain SEO friendly despite the presence of images.

4) Right usage of Keywords

Keyword Research, one of the key prerequisites of SEO, is essential to find the keywords, on which you would be later building your SEO strategy. Once that is done, these keywords should be used appropriately. Having a keyword in your title is a must as per SEO rules. Keyword density in the content should be apt – neither too high, nor too low. Although, there is no hard and fast rule to calculate the perfect keyword density, care should be taken to avoid over-stuffing of keywords because over using of keywords would eventually reduce the search engine rankings.

5) Link Building

Link buildingis an important SEO exercise that boosts a website’s search engine ranking in a huge way. Search engines like Google or Yahoo give more preference to websites that have lots of incoming links from various other websites. Apart from the number of links, what also matters is the page rank of the site from where the link is coming. For example – a link from a website with a page rank 6 would be considered better than 10 links from websites with a page rank 2.

6) Avoid Copying content

Although plagiarism does not have a direct relation with SEO, having original content in a way does help indirectly. Plagiarized content that gets caught is often removed by the search engines and are no longer indexed which would prove to be disastrous for anyone who owns a website.

7) Interlink your posts

Apart from getting links from outside, one smart way to boost the search engine rankings, is to interlink the content on your website. Interlinking of various posts must be done within a website, using the right keywords to see fruitful results. Wikipedia is a classic example of interlinked content. Now you wonder why Wikipedia results come at the top no matter what you search for.

SEO, although seems to be simple strategy, is an extremely effective way to increase the traffic to your website. So follow the simple tips listed above and see the results yourself.

Nice tips. Creating content which is SEO friendly is of course requires time and effort, especially link building. But when it is optimized, the increase in ranking and traffic is all worth it.

    Hello Rebecca,

Awesome post! Thanks for sharing. There’s nothing more I can say about it since you’ve said it all. I just wanted to emphasize on plagiarism which is not right. But if ever and just in case you want to copy another person’s socially proven content, then the right way to do it is credit or link back to the original author and or post. This way the creator of that content will thank you for it. Thanks again and looking forward to reading more from you. Nice blog ;)

    Hey Rebecca,

I totally agree, SEO is massively important; you could have the best website ever but if it is buried deep on page 5 what is the point?
It is a good tip about adding alt tags to images, people can actually search images in Google so they can get ranked this way too.

    Thanks – Jay

    Hi Rebecca!!
Impressive post but the Web design is as important as using effective SEO techniques. SEO might bring traffic to your site, but the right web design and content is what would make the visitor remain and return to your site. The web content of your site determines your site’s success even more than right key words and other SEO technicalities. Thanks for sharing.

Good point on keywords. I just recently began understanding the importance of anchor text with keywords. I saw one website where it listed all the links for my blog and found that the anchor text with most of the links I had was my first name and came from posting comments. The better way to do that is to write guest posts where keywords can be linked to your site in such areas as the post or in the bio section.

Short and simple. Most of us tend to forget on making our sites SEO friendly and just focus on the offsite SEO which is not really that beneficial if we haven’t SEO within our Site. Onsite SEO is as important as offsite SEO and should not be taken for granted.

    Hi Rebecca,
I am new to the blogging and seo world. I am not technically sound in terms of coding. I have read somewhere that pdf files on a website do not add any value to seo techniques like flash files, is it really true? I am planning to launch my first wordpress blogsite in February 2012 and I have everything ready with me. I am referring to the seo stuff for my sites and I want to make sure that it is seo friendly before its launch.

very useful post Rebecca. I would like to add one more point to your list to make your site more user friendly and that is less and proper use of scripting. To make your site user friendly, optimize your code also. Crawlers could have issue with a poorly coded website.

Not very wise duplicating content. It DOES affect SEO as the Panda Update last year clearly affected many sites. It’s also wise to deep link your posts through interlinking them and keeping people moving within your site. I did some studies this week regarding ranking in Bing. Very interesting how they’re parameters work, you should check them out. The first few results on Google would help, funny enough.

A lot of people create good content and yet they always have a hard time getting their site to the right rank, the problem is that most of them think that their job ends by creating quality content, the truth is that you have to work double as hard to make sure your content reaches the right people by choosing the right keywords and marketing your articles correctly.

I was felt lazy when it comes to creating/submitting a sitemap, gonna give it a try and see if there is any difference.

They are simple yet they sound really effective tips. Creating backlinks to sites that have lower PRs such PR2 has minimum benefit to my site, yet it is great that I could focus on quantity to make up for it. It will take a lot effort and time compared to creating backlinks to higher PRs but I consider creating backlinks to these lower PR sites significant as well.

I know most of the stuff about SEO. Lately, I’ve been wondering why not all sites gets to the top 25 and here is what I found. With today’s internet, there are so many competitions among websites in being SEO friendly. It is so many that no matter how optimized your site is it just won’t reach the first page in search engines. When everyone uses the methods to become SEO friendly it all goes down to content. The more quality your content is the more visitors will like visit it therefore generating more traffic and become more indexed among the search engines.

Great post with some basic tips that do in fact help with SERPs. One person said “Web design is as important as using effective SEO techniques” which I would have to disagree with, if by “design” he means color, theme, layout ect… “The web content of your site determines your site’s success even more than right key words and other SEO technicalities.” Aha, web content is composed of keywords…. including alt text on photos. You can have a fantastic photo or graphic, but without words, Google has no clue what the photo is.

Speaking about the 2nd point in this article: “Include a Sitemap”.
I think that it is even better to include two Sitemaps. One xml for search engines as you said before and a second html for your visitors (so they can find every single page of your website). This second (html) sitemaps are just a page more. If a search engine spider visits it, it will find more internal links.
    What do you think?

An SEO friendly website has to concentrate upon a good user experience as user signals will then make it SEO friendly.

Using standard practices as guidelines is the way to start but user experience should be the thing to concentrate upon.

Before delving directly into the SEO thingy I would suggest that whenever one is planning to start with a blog, focus on the motif, I mean, one should be clear what one wants to blog about and keep it simple. Running after traffic/ revenue/search engine would land one nowhere especially during the first 6-8 months. And most importantly, maintaining the quality of the blog is a must.
SEO is important but is not ‘the only thing’.

A site maybe SEO friendly, but that doesn’t guarantee you a place on the top pages of the search results, especially if you’re ranking for high-competition keywords. You should make it a point that you give time to your link building efforts. When I said “link building,” it’s not just link building per se. You also have to take note of relationship building.
