Zebra, the rumored name of Google’s next Algorithm upgrade, is only a few days away from kick-off. I bet you’re anxious if it’s going to bless your blog or bid it adieu. Here are a few tips, I’ve molded based on statistics of previous algorithm updates, to help you leverage them a win a positive result.

Duplicate Content: Probably the oldest term in the world of SEO. Stop using Duplicate content no matter what. It’s eventually going to destroy your blog. Not only are the articles, Duplicate Titles are at potential danger too. Start fixing the titles tonight.

Natural Links: If you are going to spam you’re way into gaining thousands of unnatural backlinks, you will be first in Google’s penalty list book.

Google’s Algorithm

Stop following those big names’ concept of Natural Links. Face the reality, you aren’t going to garner hundreds of backlinks completely natural without your intervention unless it goes viral.

Follow Safe link building techniques like Manual Social Bookmarking, Guest Posting e.t.c. Anchor text variation is the safest practice while building links. A Big No to automated software generated links. Stop exchanging Links, Google hates you for it.

Engagement: The latest algorithm updates factored in social media signals for ranking procedure. Make your site more engaging. Develop returning traffic, build your subscribers list. Connect with your fans, start being more engaging in Social Networking sites. Keep an eye on your bounce rate regularly.

I guess you are already aware of Google’s latest metric, AuthorRank, which plays a key role in SERP calculation. AuthorRank is basically an authority value of the author. It is directly proportional to his followers count on Google plus and engagement.

Blackhat Techniques: This isn’t the 90’s. Google can detect your blackhat techniques to gain unfair advantage in SEO. A few of the popular Blackhat SEO techniques include Keyword Stuffing (Excessive Repetition of target keyword in the website content), Cloaking (Displaying different content to a Search Engine and a Human Visitor).

On-Page Factors: Panda is all about on-page issues, there is a high probability that Zebra could target your website’s on-page SEO Factors as well. Use correct Html tags for header, paragraphs and other sectors of your website. Interlinking is a great techniques in on-Page SEO.

Follow the above techniques and completely drop the fear of Google Animal updates in future.

  1. Hii Nekkanti ..

when google will launch this update? I want to ask. I am a blogger who likes to exchange links, do I have to remove the link to avoid updates friends google this?

  2. Onpage and social media would be my priority if the site is new. Since On page alone can give you a serp position, social media using like exchange sites to boost it. And after a month or two, will probably start with linkbuilding. But that’s just me :)

  4. As far as I heard, Google Zebra Update is all about regarding Social Media Platform – Execessive uses of Hash Tags, Spamming the Social Media platform etc will be getting banned by Google. So don’t do anything that looks messy. Use natural and authentic link building and unique content – these features will help to enhance the online presence of your brand name. Good luck!

  5. From the personal anecdotes that I’ve heard, the websites that took the worst penalties were those with a) bought or sold paid links b) websites with many spammy comments linking to it from website outside of their niche.

Basically, the people who tried to take shortcuts to improving their SEO are being penalized. Personally, I don’t have much of an issue with that, and I think it makes it easier for those of us who practice white-hat SEO techniques.

  7. Gautham, what you’ve indicated above doesn’t sound too different from the Panda update at all – any idea what specifically Google is targeting in this latest update?

I heard at a recent conference that blog networks and sites with dodgy outbound link graphs are going to be penalised.. makes sense given the last Google update target was against spam.
