How to remove plugins on erroneous installation?
The post explains how I uninstalled the plugin with bug that made whole of my blog unusual. This is the manual process of plugin removal.
It’s funny. Really funny!
I do not install plugins in my blog without checking the details; without knowing whether it is compatible to the recent version of WordPress I’m using or not.
I was setting up my new blog, and you know how tedious is the task to do everything. Install WordPress, Theme, Plugins, Widgets and customize all those configurations! Uff! It’s a lot of tasks.
If everything goes right, you are lucky and will smile at the end of day. What if your blog shows error after you click Install for a plugin?

This happened when I was installing Social Karma 1.0 on my WordPress 3.1.1. I was even more frustrated to know the whole of my blog was down. Even the homepage displays the same error message. Look at the address bar!

Now I can’t go to WordPress backend to disable that plugin and uninstall it from there.
I had not installed that plugin without checking properly. Look at there – the compatibility up to WordPress 3.1.1

But this happens! Don’t get scared – this is normal phenomenon.
How to uninstall plugins manually?
On my previous tutorial when I was talking about Installing Plugins Manually and Automatically, Alex from Jocuri asked if we need to know manual process too?

Now my blog is locked. I can’t navigate front end. I can’t log on into dashboard. I don’t have any other way out to remove that faulty plugin and bring my site back to live again.
The solution is not as scary as the manifestation. If you are completely unaware of the WordPress file system and its way of registering themes, plugins and widgets, you’ll guess it must be tough task to troubleshoot. But the reality is just opposite!
Follow the procedure below:
Step 1.
Logon to your site through FTP. You can use any FTP client. My favorite is FileZilla. Even your host provides some sort of file manager to copy, move, delete and so on.
Step 2.
Navigate up to /public_html/ <hosted_folder> /wp-content/plugins
Every plugin installed are stored in plugins folder of wp-content folder inside your blog folder. A new folder is created every time you install a new plugin and removed the corresponding folder when you uninstall a plugin.
Step 3.
Find the folder of faulty plugin – in my case it is Social Karma 01. Delete that folder.
Step 4.
If you have done everything correctly, the plugin is gone. Log on to your WordPress Backend. The plugin is deactivated and there is nothing to worry about!
So, we’ve learned how to install plugins manually and also remove them manually if they are faulty.
Happy Blogging!

Hello Suresh,
You pretty much answered that question with this post. But with this method you can bog your database with a lot of extra tables and data. I know that most of the plugins create new tables and insert data into them and if you don’t uninstall them from the wp admin panel you will end up with a lot of useless tables that might slow your db.

That is pretty true Alex, but at that moment I was much worried about bringing my blog live again. I can think about the tables and databases to clean now. A very good reminder. Thank you for this.

I once encountered the same problem the error when i was editing index.php file . WordPress should provide a new algo that it shouldnt save the file if incase the error is detected – in realtime so that lots of tedious hard work can be wasted

Nice tutorial Suresh! Amazing how much you can get done straight from you cpanel via FTP. Nothing more frustrating for people than coming up against issues such as these and not knowing how fix it. You made it seem very simple.
Great job!

Thank you.
BTW, do you know your commentLuv links are pointing to feedproxy.google.com. Its not that problem, they use 301 redirection and not much loss, but why won’t you like to show your own link?
Please check http://seommotips.com/blogging-tips/commentluv-enabled-feedburner/ to fix if you wish.

Hmmm…. I noticed that before and not only with my links. I upgraded the commentluv plugin about a week ago. Wondering if that has something to do with it. Going have to look into that. Thanks for the reminder.

Thank you for your great tutorial which helped me with my recent issue when my whole website crashed because of a database corruption and the server administrator had to recover my site from a server backup. This was great but then when I tried to view my blog it came up with a similar error as the one you pointed above.
@Alex great point to remember and I will definitely clean my database table
Well done guys.
Kind regards

I downloaded or did something that messes up my upload of my blog and post pages. The content is setup correctly with centering and spacing between sentences, but when I upload any page or blog the centering and sentence separation has disappeared.
I possibly downloaded a plugin that may have caused this.but don’t know which one.
I am trying to eliminate the latest ones by date of install but don’t know where to find them.
Or can you think of any possible cause for this?
This kind of issue always arise in WordPress blogs. Nice tips!
BTW you commentluv plugin is not working

Thank you so much for this… I’m so green about all these thing but I’m learning very fast, thanks to great info like this. People really need to know this information if going to run their own website/blog on WordPress. I’ve had two plugin play up on my website already and it’s only a 3 weeks old. I was so stressed the first time this happened and could not find good clear information about how to fix it but I was lucky enough that my web host helped me the first time but not so lucky the second time. Anyhow after reading this I was able to do it myself! Your post is the best!!!!!
